Commack High School proudly announces "Man of La Mancha" for the Spring musical production coming to the Commack High School stage on March 27 and 28 at 8 p.m.

Based on "I, Don Quixote" by Dale Wasserman, the musical begins with the imprisonment of novelist Miguel de Cervantes during the Spanish Inquisition. Thrown into a dark prison to await trial, Cervantes and his faithful servant soon find themselves set upon by the other inmates, a bloodthirsty horde of thieves and murderers who organize an underworld trial in which the new inmates must defend themselves.

Cervantes, a novelist by trade, convinces the prisoners that his defense should take the form of an entertainment. He will present the story of a country squire named Alonso Quijana who, overwhelmed by the evil that men do toward men, puts aside his sanity and sets out into the world as a knight errant, dubbing himself Don Quixote of La Mancha, champion of the oppressed and righter of wrongs as he sings, “The Impossible Dream.”

Man of La Mancha opened Off-Broadway at the Anta Washington Square Theatre on November 22, 1965, with a cast that featured Richard Kiley (Don Quixote), Joan Diener (Aldonza/Dulcinea), and Irving Jacobson (Sancho). The production was a resounding critical success, and in March of 1968, it was transferred to the Martin Beck Theatre on Broadway, where it continued a run which would eventually reach 2,328 performances and go down in the record books as the third longest running musical of the 1960's. The film version featured Peter O'Toole, Sophia Loren, and James Coco. Kiley and Diener repeated the success at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre in 1972, and the show has since been revived on Broadway several times, most recently in 2002 for 304 performances at the Martin Beck theatre with Brian Stokes Mitchell in the title role, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Aldonza/Dulcinea.
Man Of La Mancha will be presented in the Commack High School Auditorium March 27 and 28 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $14 and may be purchased by calling the Commack High School Student Council office at 631-912-2170.
Although tickets will be sold at the door, seats are reserved and will sell quickly for this popular musical so order your tickets early. And as Don Quixote asks in the opening scene, “Come, enter into his imagination”….and enjoy.
